Point-of-care ultrasound is becoming an increasingly important extension of the clinical examination.

This 3-day hands-on POCUS workshop is designed for clinicians who want to learn how to use ultrasound to answer common bedside clinical questions — not simply learn how to operate a machine.

The course combines online preparation before the workshop with three intensive practical days covering the core POCUS applications used in acute and general clinical practice.

The emphasis is on scanning and clinical integration.

You will see the examination demonstrated, perform the scan yourself, acquire your own images and receive direct instructor feedback on probe position, image optimization, interpretation and clinical application.

Before the Workshop — Online Preparation

Before attending the practical course, participants receive online learning material covering the foundations required for the hands-on sessions.

Online preparation includes:

  • Ultrasound basics
  • Machine controls and knobology
  • Probe selection
  • Probe movements and orientation
  • Basic ultrasound physics
  • Image optimization
  • Color Doppler fundamentals
  • Common ultrasound artifacts
  • Introduction to POCUS
  • Basic clinical applications

Participants must complete the required material and online quiz before attending the practical workshop.

This allows the three practical days to focus heavily on hands-on scanning rather than lengthy introductory lectures.

 

What You’ll Actually Do

Across three full days you will:

  • Scan real patients/models under supervision
  • Perform standardized POCUS examinations
  • Learn the correct probe position and views
  • Acquire and optimize your own images
  • Interpret normal and abnormal findings
  • Apply ultrasound to clinical scenarios
  • Receive individual correction from instructors
  • Practice scanning repeatedly rather than simply watching demonstrations
  • Integrate POCUS findings with history, examination and vital signs

Small Practical Groups

Approximately 4–5 participants per instructor to maximize scanning time and individual feedback.

The aim is simple:

You scan. You acquire the images. You interpret them. Your instructor guides and corrects you.

 

DAY 1 — CORE POCUS: LUNG, CARDIAC & TRAUMA

Lung Ultrasound

Learn a systematic approach to lung POCUS, including:

  • Probe selection and positioning
  • Lung sliding
  • A-lines
  • B-lines
  • Pleural effusion
  • Lung consolidation
  • Pneumothorax
  • Basic interstitial patterns
  • Clinical integration in acute breathlessness

Clinical Applications

Use lung ultrasound to help assess common presentations such as:

  • Acute dyspnea
  • Pulmonary edema
  • Pleural effusion
  • Pneumothorax
  • Pneumonia/consolidation

 

Focused Cardiac Ultrasound

Learn the fundamental cardiac views:

  • Parasternal long axis
  • Parasternal short axis
  • Apical four-chamber
  • Subcostal four-chamber

Introduction to assessment of:

  • Global LV systolic function
  • RV size and function
  • Pericardial effusion
  • Gross chamber abnormalities
  • Basic volume/hemodynamic assessment
  • IVC assessment

The focus is focused bedside cardiac assessment, not comprehensive echocardiography.

 

FAST / eFAST

Systematic trauma assessment including:

  • Right upper quadrant
  • Left upper quadrant
  • Pelvic view
  • Pericardial view
  • Pleural views
  • Pneumothorax assessment

Hands-On

Live demonstration → supervised scanning → image review → clinical case discussion.

 

DAY 2 — ABDOMEN, AORTA, IVC & VASCULAR

Abdominal POCUS

Hepatobiliary

Introduction to:

  • Liver imaging
  • Gallbladder identification
  • Gallstones
  • Gallbladder wall
  • Pericholecystic fluid
  • Biliary assessment

Renal & Bladder

  • Kidney identification
  • Renal anatomy
  • Hydronephrosis
  • Bladder assessment
  • Bladder volume
  • Urinary retention

Free Fluid

Assessment of common abdominal views for:

  • Ascites
  • Free intraperitoneal fluid
  • Clinical integration

These abdominal applications are commonly included in comprehensive POCUS curricula. (Practical POCUS)

 

Abdominal Aorta

Learn a systematic bedside aortic examination:

  • Aortic identification
  • Transverse and longitudinal views
  • Aortic measurement
  • Aneurysm recognition
  • Iliac vessel region
  • Common technical pitfalls

 

IVC & Fluid Assessment

Introduction to:

  • IVC identification
  • IVC measurement
  • Respiratory variation
  • Integration with cardiac and lung findings
  • Limitations of IVC-based assessment

The emphasis is on using multiple POCUS findings together, rather than relying on a single measurement.

 

DVT / Compression Ultrasound

Introduction to focused lower-limb venous assessment:

  • Common femoral region
  • Femoral vein
  • Popliteal vein
  • Compression technique
  • Vessel identification
  • Basic DVT recognition
  • Color Doppler where appropriate

DAY 3 — SHOCK, PROCEDURES & CLINICAL INTEGRATION

POCUS in Shock

Learn how to combine:

  • Focused cardiac ultrasound
  • Lung ultrasound
  • IVC
  • DVT
  • Aorta
  • FAST

to approach the patient with undifferentiated hypotension or shock.

RUSH-Style Assessment

Introduction to the major components of a structured shock examination:

Pump → Tank → Pipes

The goal is to help identify patterns suggesting:

  • Hypovolemia
  • Cardiogenic shock
  • Obstructive shock
  • Distributive/septic shock

POCUS programs commonly teach integrated shock assessment rather than isolated organ scans. (Practical POCUS)

 

Ultrasound-Guided Procedures

Practical introduction to ultrasound-guided procedures, including:

Vascular Access

  • Peripheral IV access
  • Vessel identification
  • Short-axis and long-axis approaches
  • Needle visualization
  • Dynamic needle guidance

Other Procedural Applications

Depending on available equipment, patient models and group experience:

  • Fluid drainage guidance
  • Thoracentesis principles
  • Paracentesis principles
  • Needle visualization techniques

Clinical Integration & Case-Based Scanning

Throughout Day 3, participants will work through clinical scenarios rather than examining organs in isolation.

Shortness of Breath

Heart + Lung + IVC

Hypotension

Heart + Lung + IVC + FAST + DVT/Aorta when indicated

Trauma

FAST/eFAST + Lung + Cardiac

Suspected DVT

Focused venous examination + clinical assessment

Abdominal Pain

Aorta + Renal + Gallbladder + Free Fluid

The objective is to understand how POCUS can answer focused clinical questions at the bedside rather than replace a complete diagnostic ultrasound examination.
