Learn to Scan the Heart With Confidence

Develop practical cardiac ultrasound skills through three full days of intensive hands-on training.

This course is designed for clinicians who want to become confident obtaining and interpreting focused cardiac ultrasound views at the bedside.

You will not spend three days simply watching echocardiography demonstrations.

You will learn the views, position the probe yourself, acquire the images, optimize them, interpret what you see and receive direct feedback from your instructor.

The course combines online preparation before the workshop with three days of supervised practical training.

The emphasis is on hands-on scanning, image acquisition and clinically useful interpretation.

 

Before the Workshop — Online Preparation

Before attending the practical course, participants receive online preparatory material covering the foundations required for the hands-on sessions.

Online preparation includes:

  • Ultrasound fundamentals
  • Basic cardiac anatomy
  • Cardiac ultrasound terminology
  • Probe selection and handling
  • Machine controls and knobology
  • Image optimization
  • Basic Doppler principles
  • Cardiac ultrasound orientation
  • Introduction to standard cardiac views

Participants must complete the required online material and pre-course quiz before attending the practical workshop.

This allows the three practical days to focus primarily on scanning and supervised practice.

 

What You’ll Actually Do

Across three full days you will:

  • Learn and practice standard cardiac ultrasound views
  • Scan real patients/models under supervision
  • Position and manipulate the probe yourself
  • Acquire and optimize cardiac images
  • Learn how to obtain good diagnostic windows
  • Practice repeated image acquisition
  • Assess cardiac structures systematically
  • Perform focused functional assessments
  • Practice basic Doppler techniques
  • Recognize common abnormal findings

Small Practical Groups

Approximately 4–5 participants per instructor to maximize individual scanning time.

The goal is simple:

You scan. You acquire the views. You interpret the images. Your instructor guides and corrects you.

 

DAY 1 — CARDIAC ULTRASOUND FOUNDATIONS & STANDARD VIEWS

Understanding the Heart on Ultrasound

Standard Cardiac Views

Learn how to obtain and optimize:

Parasternal Long Axis

  • LV
  • RV
  • LA
  • Aortic root
  • Mitral and aortic valves
  • Pericardium

Parasternal Short Axis

Progressive short-axis assessment at different levels:

  • Aortic valve level
  • Mitral valve level
  • Papillary muscle level
  • Apical level

Apical Views

  • Apical 4-chamber
  • Apical 5-chamber
  • Apical 2-chamber
  • Apical long-axis where appropriate

Subcostal Views

  • Subcostal 4-chamber
  • Pericardial assessment
  • IVC view

Live demonstration → hands-on scanning → image review

 

DAY 2 — FUNCTIONAL CARDIAC ASSESSMENT

Once participants can reliably obtain the standard views, the focus moves to extracting clinically useful information from those images.

LV Assessment

Learn focused assessment of:

  • LV size
  • Global LV systolic function
  • Regional wall-motion abnormalities — introduction
  • Qualitative estimation of LV function
  • Basic quantitative approaches where appropriate

RV Assessment

  • RV size
  • RV compared with LV
  • RV systolic function
  • RV pressure/strain patterns — introduction
  • Basic clinical interpretation

Pericardium

Identify:

  • Pericardial effusion
  • Size and distribution
  • Common mimics
  • Basic features that may suggest hemodynamic significance

IVC Assessment

  • IVC identification
  • Long-axis and short-axis imaging
  • IVC diameter
  • Respiratory variation
  • Integration with other cardiac and clinical findings
  • Limitations of IVC-based assessment

Basic Doppler

Introduction to:

  • Color Doppler
  • PW Doppler
  • CW Doppler concepts
  • Doppler angle
  • Flow direction
  • Velocity measurement
  • Basic valve assessment

Hands-On Scanning

Participants practice each assessment repeatedly with instructor feedback.

 

DAY 3 — CLINICAL ECHO & INTEGRATED CARDIAC POCUS

Focused Valve Assessment

Introduction to the major valves:

  • Mitral valve
  • Aortic valve
  • Tricuspid valve
  • Pulmonary valve

Learn to recognize common gross abnormalities and understand when more comprehensive echocardiography is required.

Aortic Root & Proximal Aorta

Introduction to:

  • Aortic root identification
  • Basic measurements
  • Gross dilatation
  • Common technical pitfalls

Cardiac Ultrasound in Acute Care

Learn how focused cardiac ultrasound can contribute to assessment of:

Hypotension / Shock

Combine:

  • LV assessment
  • RV assessment
  • Pericardium
  • IVC
  • Lung ultrasound where appropriate

Acute Dyspnea

Integrate cardiac findings with:

  • Lung ultrasound
  • IVC
  • Clinical assessment

Suspected Pericardial Effusion

Systematic assessment of:

  • Pericardium
  • Cardiac chambers
  • IVC
  • Signs that require urgent further assessment

Suspected RV Strain

Focused assessment of:

  • RV size
  • RV function
  • Septal configuration
  • IVC
  • Integration with clinical findings

 

Image Optimization & Common Pitfalls

Throughout the course, participants learn how to recognize and correct common technical problems.

Common Pitfalls

  • Foreshortening
  • Poor acoustic windows
  • Incorrect probe orientation

The emphasis is on knowing when you have obtained a reliable view and when you need to scan again.

 

Case-Based Interpretation

The final day includes integrated clinical cases where participants work through:

Clinical presentation → focused cardiac examination → image acquisition → interpretation → clinical integration

It is not a comprehensive echocardiography reporting or accreditation programme.

The course teaches focused cardiac ultrasound skills and helps participants understand when findings require formal comprehensive echocardiography or specialist assessment.
